Chapter 18: The Great Court

They carried the Emperor into the Hall on a chair, wrapped in two quilts, with his bad hand strapped to a board.

Nobody had told him he could stay in bed.

"Majesty is not well," Ye Shuhan had said in the corridor, for the fourth time.

"Majesty is going," said Zhao Yunhe, and that had been the end of it.

He sat on the dragon throne with a blanket over his knees and his chin up.

Linyuan stood at his left with the tin cup.

The Regent stood at his right in his violet robe and nine-pearl cap, as composed as a drawn blade.

He had not looked at Linyuan since the corridor.

Linyuan had been looking at him since the corridor, and he could have drawn him with his eyes shut.

The Hall of Supreme Harmony was full again, with two hundred ministers in rows.

Under the gold pillars the elder Hu waited with his rings and his fur collar.

Beside him stood his younger brother, picking at his thumb.

And between them, small and square in his clean brown coat, stood Master Gu.

Gu did not look at Linyuan.

"Your Majesty," said the elder Hu, bowing, with the sweetness of a man carrying a cake.
