Chapter 16: The Headboard
Mercer's suite was on the top floor, at the end of the hall.
He opened the door before I knocked.
He wore grey sweatpants and nothing else, and his hair was still wet.
"You're late," he said.
"It's nine fifty-eight."
"I said nine."
"You said you'd see me tonight."
"I said I'd find you.
I'm finding you."
He took my wrist and pulled me inside, and the door shut behind me with a soft click.
The suite was dim.
One lamp was lit beside a huge bed, and on the end of the bed lay a long strip of dark blue silk.
It was a tie, the kind the team wore with their travel suits.
My mouth went dry.
"What's that for?" I asked.
"You know what it's for."
He walked slowly around me.
He stopped behind me, and his hands settled on my shoulders and slid down my arms.
"Dex told me about the bath," he said, close to my ear.
"Bram told me about the pancakes.
Everyone has had a turn at being gentle."
"Mercer."
"Tonight I'm going to do what I do."
His hands came around to the buttons of my jacket.
He undid them, one by one, slowly.
"And you're going to let me."
"Yes."
"Say it properly."
"Yes, Captain."
"Good."
The jacket fell.
