Chapter 18: The Locker Room
They got me in through the laundry.
A kit man with a cart full of dirty towels met me at gate fourteen and lifted a corner of the pile.
"Get in, miss," he said.
"The captain says it's urgent."
I got in.
The towels smelled of sweat and grass.
The cart rolled for a long time, through tunnels and over a ramp and around two corners.
Then it stopped.
A door shut.
A hand lifted the towels off my face.
It was Mercer, still in his kit, with a smear of mud across his cheekbone and his eyes.
"Hello," he said.
"You scored."
"I scored."
"You wrote on your shirt."
"I did."
"It's going to be on every screen in the country."
"I know," he said.
"I wanted it to be."
He lifted me out of the cart.
We were in the home locker room, and it was empty.
The rest of the squad had gone to the press rooms and the buses.
Long wooden benches ran down the middle of the room under bright lights.
Steam still hung faintly in the air from the showers.
