Chapter 23: The Final
There was no Ritual before the final.
At five I stood in the service corridor behind the tunnel, in my jersey.
The board chair's new credential hung around my neck.
The three of them came down the hall in their kit.
I hugged each one.
Dex, first, and he said, "I'm going to score," and I said, "You don't know that," and he said, "I'm going to try."
Bram, second, who held on for a long time and said nothing.
Mercer, last.
He put his forehead against mine.
"Win or lose," he said, "I'm yours."
I kissed him once, on the mouth, and let him go.
Then I went up to the stands, to a seat in the family section that the board chair had given me.
The stadium held eighty thousand people.
Half of them wore cow ears.
The other team was the defending champions, and they were very good.
For eighty-eight minutes nobody scored.
Bram saved everything.
He saved a header from six yards.
He saved a shot from the edge of the box that curled toward the top corner.
Each time the stadium gasped and then roared.
Dex ran himself into the ground on the wing.
Mercer was marked by two men and still found space.
In the eighty-ninth minute, Dex took the ball on the left and beat three defenders.
