Chapter 22: A Tuesday

Lorcan's POV

I have talked my way past judges, elders and one rival Alpha with a knife.

I had never been so afraid of a kitchen.

Sorrel's mother sat at a table with a plastic cloth on it, in a gray cardigan, with two cups of coffee between us.

The sun was coming up over a yard with a swing set and a deflated paddling pool.

She pushed a cup across to me.

"Sit," she said.

I sat.

"You wrote it with a ruler," she said.

I had braced for many openings, and this was not one of them.

"I'm sorry?"

"The entry in your ledger. My daughter told me. You wrote it neat, with a ruler, and shut the book."

"Yes."

"Why a ruler?"

The old answer came up easily.

I was twenty-six and I had a great deal of respect for procedure.

I looked at the cup instead.

"Because my hand was shaking," I said. "If I drew the line straight, it would look like I meant it."

She waited.

"I didn't mean it. I was afraid of him. I was afraid of the hall, and the doctor, and the look on her face. I'd decided he was right before I was in the room."

"Better," Sorrel's mother said.

I turned the cup in my hands.

"Do you want to know what I came here to say to her?" I said.

"No. I want to know what you're afraid of."
