Chapter 23: Ask Me Again

Sorrel's POV

The whole pack was waiting at the Moon Circle when I drove up on Saturday, and they parted for my car without being asked.

I got out with my mother on one arm and my daughter on the other.

My sons ran ahead into the grass, and the wolves who had knelt to me made a path for them without a word.

The stones were humming, low and expectant.

The brothers stood alone in the middle of the ring.

They wore plain shirts, and none of them had a ring on.

I walked up to them with every eye on my back.

Thane went down on one knee before I reached him.

Lorcan went down, and Gareth.

"Get up," I said.

"No," said Thane. "We rehearsed it."

"Thane."

"Let us say it."

I folded my arms and waited.

He lifted his head.

"On a Tuesday, I'll be there," he said. "When a child is sick, when the truck won't start, when you're angry. I will stay in the room."

"I'll be there," said Lorcan. "I'll know which cereal. I will never write a word about you again that I wouldn't say to your face."

"I'll be there," said Gareth. "Every night. At the table, at the bath, at the back of the school play. I'll be loud and embarrassing about it."

"He means it," said my younger son from the grass, and some of the wolves laughed.
