Chapter 6: The Enforcers

My boss was babysitting my children, and I called her before I found my keys.

"There are people coming to the house," I said. "Don't open the door."

"There are already six cars outside, honey," she said, very calmly. "I'm holding a bat."

"I'm coming."

I grabbed the dart pole from the clinic's large-animal cabinet on my way out.

It was loaded with enough sedative to put down a draft horse.

Thane's SUV was at the curb with the engine running.

I hadn't known he was there until he held the door open.

We drove four minutes in total silence.

When we turned onto my street, every porch light was off except mine.

Six black cars stood across my lawn.

A dozen big men in dark jackets stood in a half circle at the front steps.

Their captain was on the top step with his hand raised to knock.

My boss stood in the open doorway with a baseball bat on her shoulder.

My children were behind her legs in their pajamas.

My daughter had her chin up, and my younger son held a stuffed owl by one wing.

I was out of the car before it stopped.

"Step back from my door," I said.

The captain turned his head.

He was a heavy, bearded man who had run the pack's north gate for as long as I could remember.

"Evening, Sorrel," he said. "By order of the Alpha, those three belong to the Kincannon line."

"I'm here to take them home."

"They're home."

"Not anymore."

Thane came around the front of the car and stood beside me.
