Chapter 17: Fourteen Days

On day fourteen, the finale stage rose out of the lake mist at dawn, and the crowd on the shore was ten thousand deep.

Demi walked up the ramp alone.

The clock on the wall behind the host ran down from one minute.

At zero, a horn blew across the water.

"Fourteen days," the host said into his microphone. "Not one skipped. Demi Pellham finishes Wild Run."

The roar rolled over the lake.

She had not wanted it to feel like anything, and it did.

The trophy was a block of polished pine with a brass plate and a check for one million dollars in an envelope.

She took it in both hands.

Then she looked down the stage steps and found Quinton in the front row, in the same navy suit he had worn for three days.

He had not shaved.

"Mr. Pellham," the host said. "I believe you are holding something."

Quinton stood.

He held a single sheet of paper in a hand that shook.

"The release," he said.

"Read it," Demi said. "So everybody hears what you signed."

He cleared his throat.

"Pellham Talent releases Demi Pellham from all obligations under her representation agreement, effective on the final day of Wild Run, if she completes fourteen days."

"And?"

"And no penalty applies," Quinton said.

"Louder."

"No penalty applies!"

He thrust the paper up the steps.

Demi took it, folded it once, and put it in the pocket of her jacket.

"Thank you for the two million dollars you did not get," she said.

Laughter ran through the crowd.

Quinton's face did something strange, and then his phone buzzed in his breast pocket.

He did not answer it.

A woman in a gray suit climbed the ramp, followed by two men carrying a box.

"Mr. Pellham," she said. "I am the chair of the board of Pellham Talent."

"I own sixty percent of this company," Quinton said.

"You owned sixty percent as of Monday. Your father signed his shares over to the board at two this morning, to avoid a lawsuit from our four biggest clients." She held up a folder. "Under the by-laws, that makes the board your majority."
