Chapter 23: The Man Who Sold Him
Su Ming's father had not changed.
He stood beside a hired cart at the south gate in his best blue gown, a small round man of fifty-two with a clerk's stoop.
He was talking to the guard captain very loudly about his son.
The cart was piled with baskets of dried persimmons.
"I am the father of the Noble Consort," he was saying. "The father! Do you know how long I have waited?"
"I told them in Qingyang that the boy would go far. I said, that child has a gift."
"Sir," said the captain miserably, "I cannot let you in without leave"
"Father," said Su Ming.
The clerk turned.
His round face lit up in a wide smile.
"Ming'er! My boy! Look at you, in silk, and the Emperor himself told the whole court." He stretched out both arms.
"I knew it. I always knew. I only did it for the family."
Su Ming did not move into the arms.
He stood on the top step, in his grey robe, with Qiu Ye at one side and the white jade seal swinging at his belt.
Behind him, a little way up the stair, a tall man in a plain dark coat stood leaning on a pillar with his arms folded.
He had not been invited and had not said a word.
"You sold me," said Su Ming.
