Chapter 20: Where She Stood
Gavin's POV
On Monday I called every employee into the atrium at nine.
Four hundred people stood on the marble floor, and a hundred more leaned over the balcony rails.
It was the same floor where Hazel had been dragged by her hair.
I stood on the second step of the staircase with a handheld microphone and no notes.
"Two weeks ago, a video of my wife was posted in this building," I said. "Most of you watched it. Some of you sent it on."
Nobody moved.
"I told a police sergeant that she was only my secretary. I want to say that again, where she heard it first, so no one here misunderstands me. I was wrong. I was a coward, and it was the worst thing I have ever said."
I looked for her in the crowd.
She was at the back, by the revolving door, in her gray coat, with Ruby beside her.
She didn't smile.
She didn't look away either.
"Hazel Brennan is my wife," I said. "She has been for five years. She is the reason this company runs. She was also hit, kicked and had her clothes torn off in this lobby by people who thought they knew what she was."
A murmur went around the balcony.
"I have the building's camera footage. I have not released it, and I will not, but I can name two women in cream coats who started it."
A pair of women near the front stood very still.
One was in marketing. One worked for Lydia.
I knew both their names, and I did not say them.
"I'd like them to come up here," I said. "They don't have to speak. I'd like them to stand where she stood."
For a long moment nothing happened.
