Chapter 13: Three Hundred Years of Wrong
Ellory climbed out of the pit on the broken boards and knelt beside the god.
Saren did not look at him.
He knelt with his hands open on the wood, and the last of the light went out of the carved Stone below.
"Three hundred years," he said.
"I know," Ellory said.
"I told the trees he had betrayed me," Saren said. "I told the river."
"I told the Ashen Hill, and I burned it so that it would listen."
His voice was perfectly level, and that was worse.
"I told every night that came that a boy of nineteen had been cruel, and he had been dying the whole time."
Ellory put his arms around him.
Saren was rigid for a moment, and then he folded forward until his forehead rested on Ellory's shoulder.
His whole body shook.
Ellory held on and said nothing, and the dusk went blue over the broken roof.
"He told me to eat," Saren said, into his collar. "That was the last thing he said to me that I understood."
