Chapter 22: Marrowdene Again
The village came home under a roof of blossom.
Ellory stood in the lane in his gran's old coat and watched them come.
There were two hundred people, with their children on their shoulders and the song still on their lips.
Nobody stopped at the ruins.
They went in, and began to pick up their own front doors.
By noon the square was full.
The miller had dragged a table out of the wreck of the feast hall, and Gwenith sat on it with her pipe.
In front of the table, with his hands tied, stood Brannoc Dray.
Two of the baker's sons held his arms.
He had not run.
He had walked the eight miles from the ford in silence, and when a child threw a pebble at him, he had not flinched.
"Well?" the miller said, to the square.
Nobody answered.
Ellory stood at the back with Saren beside him, and Saren's hand around his in plain sight, ring and all.
"It's the village's to decide," Ellory said quietly.
"I know," said Saren. "I am learning to sit through it."
"You're doing very well."
