Chapter 14: You Don't Owe Me
The apology chair stood beside Maerielle's small table the next morning.
Thessa had brought it because Maerielle had asked for a place to receive the duke.
Maerielle looked at its carved arms and remembered moving it toward Cyralise.
She had tried to put every difficult answer into a more agreeable arrangement.
The chair had been remarkably patient about it.
"He may not come," she told Thessa.
"Then it can remain empty."
The answer seemed offensively practical.
Maerielle moved the chair nearer the window.
Thessa put it back where its legs were level.
"The sunlight would be better there," her employer said.
"The floor would be worse."
Maerielle took her hands off the chair.
When Tavrian arrived, he chose the ordinary seat beside the door.
He hadn't come to punish her for the question beside the fountain.
He hadn't come because she'd found the correct way to make him.
