Tavrian's reply arrived on an ordinary card with no explanation beyond accepting supper.
Maerielle put it beside her plate instead of reading it to Thessa.
Her companion looked relieved to be spared an interpretation.
"How many chairs?" Thessa asked.
"Two," Maerielle said.
"How many places?"
"Two."
The companion looked at the additional candlesticks her employer had selected.
Maerielle put the smallest back on the shelf herself.
She hadn't promised to become untroubled by uncertainty overnight.
She could stop making the table carry all of it.
Darian came to the doorway before supper.
He looked at the two places and smiled immediately.
Maerielle knew what he intended to make of them.
"It's a meal," she said before he could begin.
"I wouldn't dream of suggesting otherwise."
