Darian reached for Cyralise's gloves as though he could assist her into silence.
She took them away from his hand.
"You asked me to say the correction hadn't happened," she told him.
He gave a short laugh.
"I asked whether it satisfied you."
"Then you supplied the answer you preferred."
Maerielle watched without preparing a grateful speech.
Cyralise wasn't making her innocent.
She was refusing another man's attempt to use her.
Darian turned toward the guests at breakfast.
"She's misunderstood my concern."
The host from the ball preparations put down his cup.
"We've heard that explanation about the seating too," he said.
The cousin looked from him to the women.
"You can't expect every arrangement to be phrased perfectly."
Maerielle knew that defense well enough to dislike hearing it outside herself.
