Chapter 13: Nico's Question
I went down on one knee in front of him, so my eyes were level with his.
"Yes," I said.
Nico did not blink.
"Yes, Santo is your father. He is yours and Bianca's. Aurelio knew it from the first day."
"Papa knew."
"He knew, and he chose you anyway."
"Who else knew?"
"Nonna. Your mother. Santo. I found out this week, in the hospital, when Bianca needed blood."
"You didn't tell me."
"I didn't know how, and I was going to. I'd rather tell you badly tonight than well next month."
Nico looked past me at the man sitting at the table.
Santo had lifted his head from his hands.
He looked like someone who had been waiting twelve years for a sentence and now could not find the first word.
"Say it," Nico told him.
Santo stood up slowly.
