Chapter 24: Tuesday at the Bakery
On Tuesday at six the bakery on Avenue C smelled of anise and hot butter.
Nonna had been up since three.
The long oak table in the kitchen upstairs held a platter of rolls and a pot of coffee the size of a bucket.
Bianca's crayons stood in a jar beside it.
I came up the stairs with a white envelope in my bag and a gun I didn't need.
Santo came behind me, carrying two boxes of cannoli from the shop across the street.
His eyebrow had healed to a pink line next to the old scar.
"Sit," said Nonna, not turning from the stove. "The coffee's getting cold. You're both late."
"It's six."
"Six sharp means a quarter to."
Nico was already at the table with his bus map spread over the oilcloth.
He had drawn a new route in red marker, from Bayonne to the cemetery, with a tiny cross at the end.
