Chapter 15: The Rail
Wyatt peeled the transmitter off my skin.
It hurt, and he did it slowly.
He held it up to the light of the open door.
"Colonel Thurmond," he said to it, pleasantly. "I assume you're listening."
"Your witness is on my terrace. I'd like it to be clear she came on her own."
He dropped it onto the stone and ground it under his heel.
The green light went out.
Margaret watched the pieces.
"Now we are not going to have a conversation," she said. "We are going to have a tragedy."
"Mother."
"A young woman with a guilty conscience came to the scene of her friend's death. She was unstable. Everyone knows she was unstable."
She said it to the two men, not to me.
They took my arms.
I kicked the nearer one in the knee, and he swore and tightened his grip until my shoulder screamed.
"Wyatt," Margaret said. "Finish it."
He didn't move.
His face had gone gray under the terrace lights.
