Chapter 11: Let It Finish

"You knew," I said.

He did not argue.

"You knew exactly what was going to happen on that roof," I said. "Two weeks before it did."

"Not exactly," Jasper said. "But yes."

"Tell me."

He pulled out the stool across from me and sat down slowly.

"The invitation came on the sixth," he said. "No return address. I knew right away why somebody had sent it to me."

"Why?"

"Because I was never meant to behave." His voice was level. "They wanted the stalker in the crowd. A man with a protective order, in front of cameras, staring at the bride. They'd have the guards walk me out, and every phone in that room would film it."

"A trap."

"Yes."

"And you went anyway."

"I went because it was also the one chance I would ever get," he said. "Lorna had blocked me for three years. Her lawyers had answered every call I made. And she was about to say vows in front of four hundred thousand people while we were still married."

I felt very still.

"I didn't have to stop the wedding," he said. "I needed it to finish."

"So you stood still."

"So I stood still."

"Through every vow."

"I wanted her to say it. I wanted the officiant to say it, and the ring on her hand, and the whole thing on camera, with my papers in my hand." He pushed the envelope an inch across the bench. "If I'd shouted at the beginning, they'd have dragged me out before she married him, and she'd have been a frightened woman and I'd have been the man who scared her. I needed the crime to happen."
