Chapter 19: I Let It Finish
Jasper's POV
I read the text standing in a florist's doorway with my pulse in my teeth:
Come now.
I crossed the street.
The two officers at the revolving door saw me at thirty feet, and one of them touched his radio.
"Jasper MacAvoy?" he said.
"Yes."
"I have a warrant for your arrest on a protective order violation. Turn around, sir."
"I'll turn around," I said. "Give me one speech first."
"Sir..."
"Let him through."
The voice was old and dry and came from the lobby doors behind them.
Mr. Ackerly stood there on his cane, in a dinner jacket, with his chin raised.
"He is my guest," he said. "You may take him in my ballroom after he has spoken. Not before."
The officers looked at each other.
"Mr. Ackerly, it's a court order..."
"It's my building."
The younger one shrugged and stepped aside, and the other fell in at my elbow.
I did not understand why the man would help me.
I walked through the lobby with an officer on either side of me and the manila envelope under my arm.
I heard her before I saw her.
Her voice carried out of the ballroom doors, calm and level and very close to the microphone.
"...locked me in a car for four hours so you could have a livestream. I am not asking for sympathy. I'm asking you to listen to the man who stood in the back."
The doors opened.
Six hundred people turned around.
I had stood in a silence like that once before, in the back row on a rooftop.
I had kept my mouth shut.
