Chapter 8: The Card
I went home and came back with the card.
It had been in my veil box on the closet shelf for five years, under the lace and the pins.
I carried it across the street in my fist, through the rain, and he was waiting on the porch.
He had put on a dry shirt and he didn't come near me.
I stood under the porch light with water running off my hair.
"I'm going to read it," I said. "You are not going to say anything until I'm finished."
"All right."
The ink had run a little at one corner, and the paper had gone soft.
I read it out loud in a flat voice.
"Killian. I'm pregnant. It's three of them. We found out on Tuesday, and I didn't tell you because I wanted to watch your face when I said it in front of everyone."
My voice shook, and I made it stop.
"I'm not scared. You're the person I would choose again today, and I will choose you again tomorrow, whatever happens."
I looked up.
He had his hand pressed flat against the porch post.
He was crying without any sound, with his eyes open and his jaw set.
"I thought you didn't love me," he said, after a long time. "I thought you'd signed that paper because you never did."
"You thought that for five years."
"I thought you'd taken the money, and left me standing in front of my own family. And you were out there in a white dress with that in your hands."
"I was."
"And I wasn't there."
"No," I said. "You weren't."
I folded the card along its old crease.
I didn't hand it to him.
