Chapter 10: Belt
On Tuesday night I decided it was my turn.
I had been at the shed since dawn with a ruined outboard and my own thoughts.
I came home wanting something I could control.
Casimir was in the kitchen in his shirtsleeves, stirring a pot.
I turned off the stove.
"Bedroom," I said.
He looked at the pot and then at me.
"Dinner's nearly-"
"Bedroom. Take your belt off on the way."
He went.
I followed him down the hall and watched his shoulders move under the white shirt.
My grandmother's iron bed stood against the far wall, with a rail at the head, black and cold and solid.
I took the belt from his hand.
"Sit on the bed. Hands up."
"Sigrid."
"Do you want to?" I said.
"Yes," he said, at once, and his voice was rough. "God, yes."
"Then hands up."
He lay back against the pillows and raised his arms.
I looped the belt around both wrists and then around the iron rail, and pulled the buckle snug.
