Chapter 17: Thanksgiving at the Lake
Sigrid's POV
On Thanksgiving, Odile Prentiss arrived at my kitchen door with a huge turkey.
She had a bottle of wine in her other hand.
"Interim Alpha," Casimir said, taking the bird from her.
"Don't," she said. "I've been called that all morning. I've written it on my own hand to remember."
She had.
There was ink across her knuckles, and a smear of flour on her cheek.
She came in, took her coat off, and looked around my kitchen.
"I haven't cooked since I was seventeen," she said. "My mother did it. Then Leighton's housekeeper did it."
"Then you can peel," I said, and handed her a knife and a bag of potatoes.
Four more wolves came at noon.
The old woman with the pasties brought pie, and her grandson brought a guitar nobody had asked for.
The big man from the road carried in firewood and stacked it by the hearth with great care.
A young wolf I had never met sat down at the long scarred table.
"I just want to say, ma'am, it's an honor to eat at the Lake," he said.
"Don't call it that," I said. "It's a kitchen."
"It's an honor to eat at the kitchen."
"Better."
Casimir cooked.
He had the turkey in the oven by one.
The whitefish went in a pan at two, because he said no feast of his went without it.
