Chapter 18: First Snow

I pinned my grandmother's drawing above the stove in the sauna, where the steam couldn't reach it.

On Tuesday, the first snow came to stay.

It started at dusk and fell all evening, thick and slow, until the dock was white and the lake had gone quiet.

I stood at the kitchen window and watched it come down.

Casimir came up behind me and put his chin on my head.

"It's coming down hard," he said.

"I know."

"The road will be shut by morning."

"Good," I said. "Take your clothes off."

He laughed in my hair.

"It's eight degrees out."

"The sauna has been on since four. Take them off."

We went out the back door in nothing but our boots.

The cold hit me hard, and I gasped, and the gasp made a cloud.

The snow squeaked under my soles.

I ran to the sauna door and shoved it open, and the heat rolled out and wrapped us.

We sat in it a while, side by side on the upper bench, sweating.

His thigh was pressed against mine.

I put my hand flat on his stomach and felt the muscles jump.

"You're nervous," I said.

"I'm cold, and then I'm hot, and I don't know where my body is."

"Come outside," I said.

"Outside?" he said.

I stood up and held out my hand.

He took it.

I pulled him through the door, and we stepped out into the white yard, steaming, under a sky full of falling snow.

The air burned my lungs.
