Chapter 24: Kept the Lake
On a Tuesday in April, a year to the week after the first deed, I walked into the county office with Casimir.
It smelled of toner and wet coats.
The clerk behind the counter was a young man with a stack of forms and a very tired face.
"Recorder's office," he said. "Help you?"
"I own a house on Kettle Point," I said. "I want to add a name."
I put the deed on the counter.
It was the same paper, creased now from being carried in my coat all winter.
The clerk looked it over and turned a page.
"Ashgrove," he said. "And the new owner?"
"Casimir Ness," I said.
Casimir stood at my elbow in a clean flannel shirt, with the north shore warden's pin on his collar.
The clerk slid the form across.
"You'll both sign, and I'll need a witness."
"I'll find one," I said.
I turned around.
Odile stood at the back of the room by the door, in her parka, with the silver tucked under her scarf.
The pack had voted her Alpha in March, one hundred and eighty to nine, and she had cried in the Lodge kitchen after.
