Chapter 5: Friday Dinner

Sigrid's POV

On Friday he cooked me dinner at my own table, and I let him get through the fish.

He had asked before the first touch of every day for five days.

Each time I said yes, and each time it made me want him more.

He had bought whitefish off the Landing dock at four.

He fried it in butter with lemon and boiled new potatoes.

He laid a cloth over the scarred wood of my grandmother's table, a cloth I hadn't known I owned.

He lit the lamp, not candles, because he said candles were for men who needed help.

I sat down in a clean sweater.

He sat across from me in a white shirt with the sleeves pushed up his forearms.

"Eat," he said.

I ate.

It was the best fish I had ever had in my life, and I told him so.

He smiled into his plate, slow and a little shy, and the whole of me turned toward it.

"That's the dinner I asked for," he said.

"That's the dinner."

"Then I did what I said."

"You did," I said, and put my fork down. "Now come here."

He stood up at once.

I pushed my chair back and stood too.

We met at the corner of the table, with the lamp throwing our shadows on the cedar wall.

"You made me wait," I said.

"You set the terms."

"I did. I'm done with them."

I pulled him down by his shirt and kissed him.

He tasted of butter and lemon and wine.

His hands came up my back and into my hair, and my braid came undone under his fingers.

"Clear the table," I said against his mouth.

"I did the dishes."

"The table. Clear it."

He swept the plates and the cloth aside and onto a chair.

Something clattered, and neither of us looked.

I hopped up onto the bare wood and pulled him in between my knees.

"Sweater," he said, rough.

"Take it off me."

He peeled it over my head.

He took the rest of my clothes just as slowly, one piece at a time.

His eyes stayed on my face and not on my body.

Soon I sat naked on the table in the lamplight, and he still had his shirt on.

"That's unfair," I said.

"I like how it looks," he said.

"Take it off."

He unbuttoned it, and I watched his chest come bare, broad and dark-haired, and the pale scar along his side.

I put my mouth on it.

He swore under his breath.
