Chapter 19: The New Line

Perry didn't run.

Twenty years of tap. You learn where your feet are without looking.

The brown wolf came in low, for his stomach.

Perry stepped left.

The slow little boy's step, the one the kid always did wrong.

The wolf's jaws closed on air where Perry's belly had been.

The heat came up in his blood, bright and huge, and the moon was on his skin.

He grabbed the wolf as it went past.

One hand in the thick fur of its back. One hand around its foreleg.

And he swung it.

Two hundred pounds of wolf went through the air.

It hit the fallen oak at the elders' feet with a crack that echoed through the woods.

The wolf scrambled up in the snow, snarling, and turned for Perry again.

It never got there.

Garret hit it from the side.

Not as a wolf, but as a man, with both hands still wrapped in gauze.

He drove Rodney down into the snow with his whole weight and put a knee on his shoulders.

Then six wolves of the pack came off the rings and piled on.

Men and women in good coats held Rodney down by the legs and the tail.
