Chapter 22: Snow Moon

Perry didn't answer right away.

He let Garret lie there in the dark and wait, the way he'd learned to.

Then he put his chin on Garret's chest so he could see his face.

"Will it hurt?"

"Yes."

"Will you be careful?"

"No," Garret said. "You're done with careful. You told me an hour ago."

Perry laughed into his chest.

"Yes," he said. "Ask me again at the Snow Moon, in front of everyone, and I'll say it again."

The studio reopened on the last Saturday in February.

New boards. New barre, oak, bolted to the wall by Garret with a level and a lot of swearing. New mirrors.

And in the middle of the floor, a square of old, darker boards with a worn spot in it, where Perry's mother used to stand.

Brianne hung Mom's photo back up in the office. The frame was new. The sequined top hat was the same.

The first class was at ten in the morning.

Ages four to six. Ten kids.

Every one of them was a wolf.

The wolf mothers had asked, at the long table on sequin night, whether a tap teacher would ever take pups.

"Why wouldn't I?"

"They hear the beat too well," the woman in green had said. "They'll howl."

They howled.

The first time Perry did a fast shuffle, ten four-year-olds threw back their heads and howled at the ceiling.

The mothers along the back wall covered their faces.

He put Maggie in her sling on his chest and did it again, faster.

They howled louder.

"Okay," he said. "New rule. You can howl. But only on the count of eight."

By the end of the hour, ten pups were doing shuffle-ball-change and howling on eight, perfectly together.

Maggie slept through all of it.

That night was the Snow Moon.

The clearing in the Palos woods was white, deep snow under the oaks, lanterns in the branches again.

The whole pack stood in rings, three hundred of them.

Brianne stood in the front ring with her son on her hip, in a borrowed wool coat, not a puffer, because Dolores had made her.

Dolores stood at the stump with the Moon Book open in front of her and Maggie in the crook of her arm.

She was holding her correctly.

Garret and Perry walked into the middle of the clearing from opposite sides.

Garret was in a black suit. Perry was in his cream sweater and his mother's tap shoes, because he'd decided.
