Chapter 18: Taking Her Word
"Mom," I said carefully, "I don't have a daddy. He left when I was two."
I heard myself say it.
It came out smooth.
On the other end my mother made a small sound.
"Is that what it tells you?" she said. "Oh, baby. Is that what it's telling you?"
"Mom, I'm coming over."
"Bring that glass," she said. "Whatever he gave you, bring it."
I drove across town at twelve thirty with the empty holder on the seat beside me.
Mom was sitting on the edge of her bed in her nightgown with a man's pillow in her lap.
The other side of the bed was turned down.
There was a dent in the mattress the shape of somebody heavier than her.
"Who sleeps there?" I asked.
"Your daddy." She held the pillow tighter. "Thirty-one years, on the left, because of the door."
A pair of men's work boots stood by the closet, size eleven, with mud on the toes.
I knew they were Mom's yard boots.
I'd always known that.
They were also twice the size of her feet.
A gray uniform shirt hung on the back of the door with a patch on the sleeve.
