Chapter 22: Three Hundred Witnesses

His wife leaned in to look over his shoulder.

"Callie," she said. "Lord, it's Callie. She was supposed to be the bride."

People on the steps behind them began to crowd up to see.

A woman in a pink hat looked at the next print and grabbed her husband's sleeve.

"That's our mail carrier," she said. "That's Haley's daddy. Where on earth has he been?"

"That's the teller who asked about the Rountree accounts," a man said. "In 2004. She just quit coming in."

"That's his aunt," somebody else said. "Price's daddy's sister. She used to play tennis at the club."

A woman from the mill side stood in front of the girl with the scrunchie and put her hand flat on the glass.

Mom came up the walk with the widow on one arm and Jesse's mother on the other.

She stopped in front of Daddy's picture.

She didn't cry.

She reached out and straightened the frame, the way she straightened his collar on Sundays.

At five minutes to five a white car pulled up at the curb with ribbons on the antenna.

The goddaughter got out in her strapless dress with her bridesmaids holding her train.
