Chapter 9: Mrs. Vasari
Ines's POV
We were married on a Saturday morning in October at the Galveston County courthouse.
The room had a flag and a radiator and a clerk who had known Nico's father.
I wore a cream dress from a consignment shop on Postoffice Street.
Carmela had pinned a small gold medal inside the hem without telling me.
I found it when I knelt to fix Luca's collar.
Gianni stood on one side of me in a clip-on tie.
Teo stood on the other with his seahorse under his arm and his hair combed flat by his grandmother.
He held my hand through the whole ceremony without being asked.
"Do you, Dominic Vasari," said the clerk.
"I do," said Nico, before she had finished.
The clerk looked at him over her glasses.
"I'm not done, Nico," she said.
"I know," he said.
"I'm saving time."
Carmela, in the front row, made a small sound into her handkerchief that might have been a laugh.
I said my own vows with my hand in Teo's and my eyes on the man in front of me.
He wore a charcoal suit with no tie.
When the clerk said he might kiss the bride, he did, once, gravely, with his hand at the side of my face.
It was the shortest kiss he had ever given me, and I felt it all the way to my feet.
We ate lunch at the compound in the long dining room with forty people.
Nobody said Rocco's name.
Biagio Gallo lifted a glass to us from the end of the table and smiled at me through the whole toast.
He never once looked at the boys.
The twins fell asleep under the table at four with their heads on Teo's sneakers.
Carmela carried them upstairs one at a time, and Teo walked behind her holding the banister.
"They'll stay with me tonight," she said at the foot of the stairs.
"All three."
"Mrs. Vasari," I began.
