Chapter 18: Unit 114
"Did she hurt you?" Winston said, and he took my face in both hands.
"No. She ran."
"Who ran her?"
I held up the brass key.
He read the tag, and a muscle moved in his jaw.
"Alder Street," he said.
"I know."
"It's not a coincidence."
"It's two blocks from a pharmacy, and the pharmacy is two blocks from your mother's, and half the city lives there," I said. "You told me that yourself on Tuesday. Let's look before we decide."
He stood a moment longer.
Then he took my hand and walked me down the hill to his car.
The storage place was a long brick building with a night guard who looked at Winston's driver's license and the Garrick name and did not ask a single question.
Unit 114 was a metal door at the end of a cold corridor.
The key turned stiffly.
Inside there was a gray filing cabinet, a folding chair, and a shoebox on the cabinet's top.
I opened the box.
It was full of cream envelopes, each one cut open along the top.
There were dozens of them packed tight.
Each envelope held a bundle of bills, with a rubber band around it, and a single typed card.
I lifted out the first card and read it under the bare bulb.
Tuesday the 14th. 7:40 p.m. Say you can't breathe. Say his name twice.
"She kept the instructions," I said.
"She kept everything."
Winston took a card from the middle of the stack.
Friday the 9th. 7:40 p.m. His wife's birthday dinner. Cry before you speak.
He put it down very gently.
He put down the next one with the same care.
