Winston did not wait for Friday.

At two that afternoon he called the reporter from the city paper who had written every Garrick wedding announcement for twenty years.

"Come to Linden Street," he said. "Bring a recorder. I'm going to tell you something before my mother does."

She arrived in forty minutes, a gray-haired woman in flat shoes with a tape recorder older than Milo.

She sat at the dining table where Winston and I had eaten our first dinner as husband and wife.

I sat at the far end and said nothing.

"Mrs. Garrick has been alive for four years," the reporter said. "You've known about the crash for longer than she has. Is that right?"

"I've known the brake line was cut since the morning of her funeral," Winston said.

Her pen stopped.

"Cut."

"With a blade. I have the line, and so does the police detective who took it from my safe last night. I kept it there for four years and told nobody."

"Why?"

"I thought the person who did it was close to me. I was right."

She looked at me.

I nodded once, and she looked back at him.

"You were engaged to Juliet Carrow."

"I asked her to marry me to keep her within reach. I used my wife's grave for that, and Juliet's name, and I'm not going to dress it up. It was a cruel thing to do to a woman who had done nothing to deserve it."

"Had she?"

"She took money to make my phone ring on my anniversaries. I'll let her tell you the rest."
