Chapter 6: The Lawn
I parked across the driveway so the moving truck couldn't leave and got out with the van keys in my fist.
"Hi, Preston," I said. "Why are my winter coats on the grass?"
He came down two steps with the clipboard held against his chest.
"Kyle asked me to take care of this," he said. "It's been a hard couple of days for everybody. He wants the house cleared and listed before the end of the month, and he'd like to be fair about your things."
"Fair."
"These are all yours, Will. We just boxed them for you. Your grandmother's sewing machine is on the truck. We're taking it to a storage unit in your name."
"In my name."
"Kyle's paying the first year."
On the lawn, a mover in a grey sweatshirt was carrying out my grandmother's rocking chair.
I walked straight up to him.
"Put it down," I said.
He looked at Preston.
"Put it down on the ground," I said. "Right there. Not in the truck."
He set it on the grass.
Up and down Alder Street, porch lights were coming on.
A woman I had waved at every morning for five years stood on her steps with her phone held up.
Good.
"Preston," I said, loud enough to carry, "this house has two names on the deed. His and mine. My grandmother's money paid for the down payment, and the closing papers are on my phone right now. You don't have a court order. You don't have a key. What you have is a moving truck."
"I have a key," Preston said, and held up the brass one.
"You have a key my husband gave you without asking me."
"Technically he's your husband."
"Technically I'm the one calling the police."
Preston smiled at me.
It was a good smile, easy, a little rueful, the kind that makes you feel unreasonable.
