Chapter 10: The Wedding
The wedding tent stood on the lawn at VanDusen Garden, white canvas with the sides rolled up, and for once in April it wasn't raining.
By four o'clock all twenty-two tables were done.
White ranunculus and cherry branches in low glass, trailing jasmine down the long head table, and one bowl of floating magnolia by the cake because the bride had cried when she saw it in my sample book.
Mei stood beside me in a black dress with her hands on her hips.
"We're geniuses," she said.
"We're tired."
"Tired geniuses." She pointed with her chin. "Here comes the godmother. Twelve o'clock."
Margaret came across the lawn in gray silk and pearls, with Vanessa on one side and Daniel on the other.
Vanessa wore pale gold. Daniel wore a navy suit and looked at me before he looked at anything else.
Margaret walked straight past the guests to the bride's father, a big, kind, flustered man in a rented tuxedo.
I watched her lean in and talk.
I watched him look over at me.
Two minutes later the venue coordinator hurried across the grass with an apologetic face.
"Ms. Chen, I'm so sorry. The family has asked that vendors wait outside the tent during the reception."
"Which family?"
She glanced back at Margaret.
"It's fine," I said. "We'll be by the vans."
"Like hell we will," Mei said under her breath.
"Mei."
"Fine. Like heck."
We stood by the delivery van at the edge of the lawn for the whole dinner, eating sandwiches the catering staff smuggled us.
Through the open sides of the tent, I could see my flowers on every table and Margaret at the family table, laughing with her head back.
