Chapter 29: The Safe
I went down the steps to her.
Holden came as far as the doormat and stopped there, where she could see him.
The rain had flattened Margaret's silver hair against her skull. Without the pearls, her neck looked thin.
"Say it here," I said.
"Not in the rain. Not on your aunt's path." She lifted her chin. "Tuesday. Ten o'clock. Come to the house."
"Why would I?"
"Because your mother's things are in my safe," Margaret said. "And on Wednesday the lender's people change the locks."
On Tuesday at ten the front door of the Shaughnessy house stood wide open.
Men in gray T-shirts carried out a dining table I had eaten at every Sunday for two years.
A man in a rain jacket with a ring of keys on his belt stood in the front hall, counting.
He gave me a solemn nod.
Margaret stood at the foot of the staircase in a plain navy dress, with her hands folded.
"Mrs. Rutherford," she said.
"Mrs. Zhang."
"Your husband didn't come."
"He's in the car. I asked him to wait."
"Of course you did."
She looked past me, down the drive, at the black Range Rover by the gate.
