Chapter 9: The Sting

Griffin woke up alone in his wife's bed with the pillow wall standing neatly between him and nobody.

A note was taped to the top pillow.

Day fourteen. Freeze: valid reason. Coffee is downstairs. Shoes are optional.

He read it twice.

Then he went down the hall in his bare feet, for the first time in her house, on purpose.

Imogen was at the island, in a gray suit, with her hair pinned flat again.

She looked at his feet.

She wrote something down.

"What did I get?" he asked.

"Zero."

"Zero is good?"

"Zero is a score I've never used." She slid a cup toward him. "Your mother is coming at ten. She has a plan."

His mother came at ten with a sack of bagels and a tape recorder.

"It's a sting," Delphine said, placing the recorder in the middle of the kitchen island. "I've always wanted to run one. Garrison will never let me."

Imogen set a pastry on a plate.

"Tell us the plan, Delphine."

"Tobias is a leak. We know it. Garrison doesn't believe it. So we feed Tobias a secret so juicy that he'll run to my husband with it, and we make sure the secret is in writing."

"Which secret?"

"That Griffin has hidden a letter in the library," his mother said. "A letter proving the marriage is fake. Garrison will want to see it."

Griffin stared at her.

"Mom, is there a letter?"

"No, darling. It's an envelope. It says I QUIT on the front. It's empty."
