Chapter 13: Two Women Said No
Corwin had arranged six cushions on the consort's chair.
Sabine looked at them before the reception began.
"They've raised the position," she told me.
"I was afraid they'd make it comfortable," I said.
She took my hand briefly.
Then she went to stand where the king could see her.
I stayed among the other guests, close enough if she wanted me.
Osric wore the formal coat he'd torn at our supper.
The repair showed near his pocket.
I found the tiny uneven seam strangely dear.
Corwin rang his bell and asked for silence.
The servants brought in covered dishes nobody would eat until the announcement ended.
Bram examined the nearest lid.
Deborah nudged him away.
"It might be peas," he whispered.
"First," Corwin announced, "the consort receives a suite of eleven rooms."
"Which one has the kettle?" Bram called.
"Tea is brought to her," Corwin said.
"From where?"
"From the kitchens."
"How far are the kitchens?" Deborah asked.
Corwin consulted nothing and answered anyway.
