Chapter 6: The Wrong Demonstration

"I'll show them how to carry a chair," I told Corwin.

He looked at the king for assistance.

Osric stayed beside the apple tree.

"She decides whether she attends," he said.

Corwin smiled at me with visible effort.

"Then naturally I hope you'll attend."

I wanted the pack to see what he was calling effortless service.

I agreed on the condition that Deborah selected the demonstration.

My aunt accepted with an enthusiasm that frightened Bram.

By afternoon, the hall contained a royal chair, an empty tray, and an expectant crowd.

Corwin stood beside the chair in his best coat.

Deborah stood beside the tray with her sleeves rolled up.

Osric sat among the audience rather than on the platform.

He left an ordinary chair free beside him.

I noticed it before I meant to.

"A consort anticipates her king's comfort," Corwin began.

Deborah handed him the tray.

"Show us," she said.

"This is a demonstration for the women."

"We learn best from experts," she replied.

Bram settled happily into his seat.

Corwin took the tray.

Deborah put a cup on it.

He carried it across the platform without spilling.

Several pack members clapped politely.

"Very nice," Deborah said.

She added the teapot.

Corwin made the second crossing with his elbows pressed against his sides.
