Inside the silver circle the air felt thinner, and every sound rang.
Hakon stood with Joren's hand in his, and the whole hall waited.
"My lords," he said. "I am Hakon Aldenhoff, son of Ludvig, and I cannot lie in this place."
"Joren Hallgren is my mate. I took his mark at eighteen."
"He bit me in his cell, and I would do both again tonight."
Nobody moved.
"Duke Wexel says I am unfit because I have no Moon Queen."
"I say a king who cannot say what he is has no business wearing the crown."
He turned to the dais.
"Your Grace. I have one question for you. I ask you to step into the circle and answer it."
"I do not take orders from the Heir," said the Duke.
"It is not an order. It is the law of the Moot," Hakon said.
"A lord who is accused may answer within the circle, or he may refuse."
"And if he refuses?" the Duke said.
"Then his refusal is the answer."
A murmur ran around the walls.
The Duke's face did not change.
He looked at the benches, at the two hundred lords of the twelve houses, and Hakon watched him weigh it.
