Chapter 23: Midwinter Moon
The crown of Vellenmark was heavier than Hakon had expected.
It was a plain circle of black iron set with twelve small moonstones.
It sat on his head in the Moot Hall on the night of the Midwinter Moon, and he could feel every ounce of it.
He stood on the dais before two hundred lords.
His father stood at his side, in a black coat, leaning on a stick.
The old man had walked in on his own legs.
It had taken him most of the winter to learn to do it again, and the physician swore he was a fool.
"Rise, Hakon Aldenhoff," the King said, and his voice carried to the back benches.
"King of Vellenmark, and Keeper of the Charter as it stands."
"Which is not as it stood," said Hakon.
"No," the King said.
"Section nine is gone," Hakon said.
"And section one is a dead letter, by order of the Moot."
"The Moon Queen may be whoever the Moon chooses."
The King's mouth twitched.
"The clerks have been working for ten weeks."
A murmur of laughter went through the hall.
Hakon turned his head.
At the foot of the dais stood a tall man in a black coat.
A silver ring and an iron one hung at his collar.
Joren was watching him.
His eyes were bright, and he was trying very hard to look like a guard.
The Moon Priest bowed to the new King.
