Chapter 8: Letters

"Hey, Hayes," Brock said through the cellar door. "Does she know about the letters yet?"

I felt Corbin go still against me.

"What letters?" I said.

"Ask him." Brock thumped the door once with his fist. "Dad says you can open up and sign, Lara, or you can stay down there with the half-wolf until the silver finishes him."

"Go to hell," I said.

"Oh, that's cute. He wrote you every year, you know. Fifteen of them. Dad kept them in a shoebox."

The pounding stopped.

Boots went away up the stairs, and one door banged somewhere overhead, and the lodge went quiet.

I stood with my arms still around Corbin's bare back and my forehead against his collarbone.

"Corbin."

"I know."

"What letters?"

He took a long breath.

"I wrote to you on your birthday every year," he said. "From the year you turned ten. I never knew if they reached you."

My stomach turned over.

"Why would you write to me?"

"Because I couldn't come."

"That isn't an answer either."

"It's the one I have in the dark." His hand found my braid and pulled it gently over my shoulder, out of the way. "I sent them to the pack house box in Ashgrove, to your name. I never got a reply, not once, in fifteen years."

I pulled back far enough to see his face.

Even in the dark I could see the gold in his eyes, steady now and low.

"I wrote to Stonecrest," I said.

His whole body changed.

"When?"

"The year I turned sixteen. My uncle had taken my father's truck and told me I'd be married to a man in the next pack the year after. Brock had put me through a wall." I heard my own voice, flat and quiet. "I didn't know who to ask. My father had been friends with the Alpha at Stonecrest, so I wrote to him. I asked if I could come and work in the stables, anything. I said I wasn't a real wolf and I wouldn't be any trouble."
