Chapter 9: Two Days Before

I was still holding the photograph when Ronan came into the study.

He had heard the drawer.

He stood in the doorway and looked at my hand, and then at the pin in the map.

"Mara," he said.

"Don't."

"Let me tell you."

"Tell me what this is."

I held the picture up.

"That's the DSW lot," I said. "That's me, two days before somebody put me through a guardrail. And that's your handwriting."

"Yes."

"Let it start. What does that mean?"

He shut the door behind him and stood with his back against it.

"Faulk's men had been following you since Wednesday," he said. "Abel saw them outside your flat."

"Wednesday."

"I knew they were going to move on you by the weekend."

"You knew."

"I couldn't prove it. Everything we have on Faulk is a feeling, and the Moot doesn't hear feelings."

"What does it hear?"

"An Alpha attacking an officer of the department in front of witnesses."

I couldn't speak for a second.

"You needed him to attack me."

"I needed him to try."

"So you let him."

"I put Abel on the highway and I stayed a mile behind you," Ronan said.

"And?"

"I thought I could stop it the moment he started. I was wrong about the distance. I was a minute late."

"You were a minute late."

"Yes."

"I was upside down in a car."

"I know where you were."

"I had glass in my mouth!"

"I know."

My hands were shaking so badly the photograph rattled.

"You looked at me in the road and said I owed you," I said.

"Mara."

"I owed you my life, and the whole time you were the reason I was in danger."
