Chapter 16: The Poisoner

The litter came down the Blackwater bank with a dozen Ashfall warriors at its corners.

Garrick lay on it under a blanket, grey from hairline to throat, his eyes half shut.

Behind the litter walked the old Ashfall elder, the one who had watched him sweat on the dais, and behind him came Joss.

Joss would not look at me.

Imogen stopped at the edge of the Moon Stone circle and dropped to her knees in the frost.

"Alpha Haldane," she said, and her voice shook so beautifully that the whole circle leaned toward her. "Blackwater council. I come in grief."

"Get up, Mrs. Thornwell," Bram said.

"I can't." She pressed a hand to her mouth. "My brother-in-law is dying, and I know why."

Hester muttered something under her breath that I won't repeat.

Imogen held up a small brown glass bottle.

"Wolfsbane tincture. I found it in the bottom of Cora's trunk when I packed her room for her. She mixed it into his tea, every full moon, for three years."

A hiss of breath went through the Ashfall warriors.

"That's a lie," I said.

"Is it?" Imogen turned her wet, blue eyes on me. "You made him tea before every run. Everyone saw it. Joss, you saw it."

Joss's throat moved.

"She made tea," he said. "I never saw what was in it."

"You see?" Imogen said gently.

It was neat, and I had to admire how neat it was.
