Chapter 14: Champagne
Bea threw a noodle at the TV.
It stuck to the host's face for a second and slid down.
"Ten weeks," she said. "Ten. She came out of the bandages two weeks ago. Did she do it in the recovery room?"
I didn't answer.
I was looking at Vivica's hand on her stomach.
It was my hand, the way I'd been holding mine all week.
She'd copied that too.
My phone started buzzing on the counter and didn't stop.
Unknown numbers. Two directors. A girl I'd done a cereal ad with at nineteen.
A reporter who wanted to know how it felt to be pregnant at the same time as the other woman.
I turned it face down.
"Is it true?" Bea said quietly. "Any part of it?"
"No."
"You're sure."
"I'm sure he'd tell me to my face," I said. "And I'm sure she'd lie to a camera."
Bea's phone lit up next.
She read it and her eyebrows went all the way up.
"Her publicist just sent the press list for tomorrow," she said. "Vivica's doing a sit-down lunch with the big glossy. One o'clock, the patio at that place on Canon Drive. 'Her first interview as a mother.'"
"How do you have that?"
"Because her publicist used to be my intern and she hates her." Bea smiled slowly. "What are you thinking?"
