Chapter 18: Terms

I shook Damon awake and held the phone in front of his face.

He looked at it for a long time.

He pinched the screen and made the woman by the churro stand bigger.

The white dress. The bump. The smile aimed at the lens.

"She was at the pier," he said.

"She was ten feet behind us the whole time. Watching us ride a Ferris wheel."

"That's not a ten-week bump."

"No," I said. "That's a sofa cushion."

He sat up on the edge of the little bed and put his feet on the floor.

"She's following you."

"She's following you. I'm just where you are now."

He was gone by seven, with two of his men posted at each end of Bea's block instead of one.

Bea came home at nine with coffee and found the octopus in her kitchen sink.

"I'm not going to ask," she said. "I'm going to assume it was romantic."

At ten, somebody knocked on her front door.

Not a delivery knock. Three slow raps.

Bea looked through the peephole.

Then she turned around and pressed her back against the door.

"It's your mother-in-law," she whispered.

"She's not my anything."

"She's on my porch in pearls, honey. Should I get the hose?"

I opened the door.
