Chapter 9: Rule Two Was Yours

We did not speak for the whole drive to Connecticut.

He kept both hands on the wheel, and I kept my eyes on the dark road and on the scar across the back of his left hand.

I had been looking at it for a week.

The porch lamp was lit when we pulled in.

Byron cut the engine and got out and came around to my door.

He opened it and stood back.

I stepped out onto the gravel and stopped in front of him.

"You said a plan," I said. "On Thursday. At the table."

"I did."

"Say it again."

He looked at me for a long time. The night was cold and I could see his breath.

"I'm going to take you inside," he said. "And I'm going to take that dress off you, and you're going to tell me everything he never bothered to learn."

My whole body went hot, and I let it.

"Rule two," I said.

"Rule two," he agreed, and did not move. "It's yours."

"Then I'm calling it."

I took his face in both hands and kissed him.

It was nothing like the way Porter kissed.

Porter kissed with his eyes open, watching how it landed.

Byron kissed me and did not stop for air.

His arms came around me and lifted me against him, and I heard the sound he made in his throat.

We got as far as the front hall.

He pressed me back against the door and the cold of it went through my dress.

His mouth was on my jaw, my throat, the place below my ear.

"Natasha," he said against my skin.

"Again."

"Natasha."

Nobody had said my whole name like that. Porter had only ever used it when he was angry.

I pulled his shirt out of his waistband and put my hands on his back.

He was warm and hard under my palms, and he shuddered.

"Upstairs," I said.
