Chapter 21: Live

Union Station's great hall had a ceiling of painted beams, and Joss had set up under the clock with a ring light on a stand.

The viewer count on the corner of her phone screen climbed past nine thousand.

I stood behind a pillar with Megan on one side and Caleb on the other, and watched her go live.

She wore white, no makeup, no hoops, and a small gold cross I had never seen on her.

"Hi, everybody," she said to the camera. "I'm going to keep this short and honest."

Her voice shook just right.

"I've been silent for four days because I was told to be quiet by people who said it would make things easier. It hasn't. I want to tell you what actually happened."

"She's rehearsed it," Megan murmured.

"I'm sure."

"The person you saw on that stage hurt me very badly," Joss said. "I'm stepping back from content for my mental health. But before I go, I need you to know that Carys Farnsworth has been harassing me for weeks. She has contacted my sponsors, and she has threatened me at my workplace."

"She doesn't have a workplace," Megan said.

"I'm going to show you messages," Joss said. "Some of them are hard to read."

She lifted her phone, and the comment section scrolled fast.

Three hundred hearts. Two hundred angry faces.

Caleb looked at me.

"Now?" he said.

"Now."

I stepped out from behind the pillar.

I walked straight across the marble with my phone in my hand, and the ring light caught me full in the face.

Joss saw me over the edge of her camera.

For a moment, her mouth stayed open on a word.

"Hi, Joss," I said.

"Carys." She tried a laugh. "I'm live. You shouldn't be here."

"It's a public station."

"Security."

"They're welcome to come and listen."
