Chapter 22: Return Flight

Louisa's POV

The line for the London show began at the barrier at noon, six hours before the doors.

I stood in the loading lane with Eli on one side of me and Nan on the other, and I watched Brianna walk up to the barrier alone.

She wore jeans and a gray sweatshirt.

She had no tote and no makeup, and nobody had set her hair.

The fans nearest the barrier went silent as she passed them, and then the silence ran down the whole line.

Eli's tour manager held out a small microphone on a stick.

"One minute," he said. "She decides what to say."

Brianna took it with a shaking hand.

She did not look at me.

"I'm not T.," she said.

Her voice came out thin, and the speaker at the end of the lane gave it a hollow echo.

"I never was. Louisa Wingate wrote every letter, and I found them in an inbox she made for herself. I took her tickets and her seat. I told you things about her that weren't true, and I took her notebook."

Somebody in the line said, "Louder."

She lifted her head.

"I stole her name," Brianna said, louder, "because I wanted what it got her. I'm sorry. That's all."

She handed back the microphone.

For a moment, nobody made a sound.

Then someone near the front called out something in a hard voice, and a woman beside her said, "Let her go."

Brianna started to walk away, down the length of the barrier, with the whole line watching.
