Chapter 23: Biscuit

Connor flew home that night in a middle seat he paid for himself, with the last of his own savings.

Nan watched him go through security and said "Well," once, and took my arm.

By four we were back at the arena, in the catering room behind the stage.

It had a long steel table and a bowl of oranges nobody had touched.

Eli's crew had left us alone.

Nan had taken the chair at the head of the table, with a cup of the venue's terrible tea, and Eli sat across from her with his sleeves pushed up.

He looked more nervous than he had in front of fourteen thousand people.

"You have a dog," Nan said to him.

"I used to," Eli said. "A beagle. He was fourteen."

"Louisa had a dog."

"I know. Biscuit."

"Do you know what he did?"

"No."

"Tell him," Nan said.

I put down my tea.

"He was a rescue," I said. "I got him from the clinic when I was twenty-two, the month after my mom died. He was the most useless animal. He was afraid of the vacuum and the mailman and his own tail."

Eli smiled.

"One Christmas Nan was wrapping presents at the kitchen table," I said, "and she turned around for a second, and he ate a whole roll of stamps."

"Forty," Nan said. "A flag on each one."

"I had to call the vet. The vet asked what kind of stamps. I said, forever stamps. He said, 'Well, that's a long time to be worried.'"
